My neighbors 1066 didnt want to move this morning -- He said that the hydrualic filter and the fluid was changed last January and He changed the filter 2 weeks ago again -- the hydraulics didnt work either till the tractor ran for a while -- then it would move too -- is the hyd. pump going out???and what does the hyd. pump have to do with it not moving?? Roy

The TA is out on your neighbor's tractor. It is hydraulically driven in high range and mechanically driven in low range. If the hydraulics are out it goes into low range by default. If it does not move at all with no hydraulics, the TA is out on the low side.

There are pressures to check to diagnose the problem. Others who know more about that will come along shortly and tell you what to test for.

Sounds to me though like the hydraulic pump for the TA, steering, and brakes is losing prime. That means an o-ring has failed somewhere and is letting air into the system.

Sometimes when you have changed filters you have to run the tractor and cycle the steering back and forth to get all the air out of the lines and fluid flowing. I have to do this with a 584 every time I changed the trans filters. There is no steering until I have run the tractor and cycled the steering wheel back and forth several times. This may not be the problem with your neighbours 1066 but it was working before the filter change so its worth a try.

Add 5 gallons of Hytran to the fill port over full. (no harm will come from it) The extra fluid covers a possibly leaky tube and or Oring issue that is way more expensive to fix. It is a standard cure for at least eliminating those issues, an might "fix" it for ever (or something else wears out) Jim

Well here is what We found so far -- pulled the filter and the fluid was very milky -- so We drained all the fluid too -- four drain plugs or was it five? Brother did that part - around the filter it was like snot -- put some deisel fuel down the hole may that will flush some gunk out - letting it drain overnight and will refill it tomorrow and see what works -- will let You all know how it turns out -- thanks for all the input! PS; this poor tractor never sees a shed of any kind -- 30 inches of precip. since January -- go figure ! Roy

well if ya found milky hyd fluid ya found most of the problem , Now with the weather turning colder people will start seeing this more . . Now i am here to tell ya that just because you changed the oil and think you solved the problem ya didn't as it is going to take ALOT MORE filter changes to get aqll the moisture out and have nice CLEAN oil. . Each time you change the filter on a 66 tractor replace the rubber O/RING on the filter housing . Next like Jim said ADD and extra five over the full mark . I am sure you will have priming problems for a good while due to the fact that the filter will be trapping more moisture and the bypass screen will start to plug also with ice cristels . To help pick up prime start the tractor and make sure engine oil comes up then run the engine on up to 1500-2000 RPM and turn the steering wheel to the left and keep on turning it as this will bleed the system , it may take a bit but it does work most of the time unless the MCV pump is on it's last legs. Go buy a case of fliters and a package of O/Rings and keep changing out the filters as needed and i am not talking once a year , you may only get five min on a filter or ten hours till it gets the moisture out . Then change them on each oil change. Engine oil change.

Well We put in the filter and filled the old girl up with fluid -- cranked it up - turned on the steering wheel till it worked and then every thing else worked too -- except the clutch sure pushes hard -- and when completly pushed it doesnt come out of gear very good some pressure is still on there -- not much free play so is there something else that needs adjusting? thanks for the help so far! Roy

I've often wondered about putting a magnetic block heater on the transmission case of my tractors to "help" with the condensation issues. Any thoughts on that?
