Farmall H Transmission

I am looking at a 1947 Farmall H. It is a decent tractor but it jumps out of 5th gear. What would be the most likely cause of this issue? Expensive fix? Thanks for any replies.

The 4th to fifth shift when done in a hurry for 60 years, causes a grinding into 5th. That grinding takes its tole on the splines used to mate the 4th 5th sliding gear to the input shaft. Fifth is direct drive through the trans top shafts. Two other causes (contributing, or main?) are a worn front set of bearings in the input shaft carrier, or a bad intermediate pilot bearing between the two shafts. an additional issue is broken spring/missing ball in the shift rail detent. If when you put it in 5th, the shifter moves only a quarter inch from tooth touch grinding to "as far as it will go" the 4th 5th slider needs to be replaced along with the input shaft, and pilot bearing. A bent shifter fork (or worn prongs on the fork where they touch the slider, are possible, but very unlikely. I believe it can be repaired without a split, and through the belt pulley cover, or removal of the pulley drive. Be careful ti tie up the rollers of the pilot bearing to prevent them from getting into the trans case. Some of the cages are worn enough to let them fall out. There are exploded diagrams in Caseih.com on Line parts store. Jim

Remove the belt pulley gear box or opening cover and look at internal teeth of sliding gear on right. teeth it locks to on end of left shaft and the bearing in picture. Also see if the shift fork moves the sliding gear into mesh with teeth. Also feel for some resistance when shifting out of fifth, detent ball with spring should give shift fork a slight resistance when shifting out of gear. If shaft on left has more movement than normal the bearings on it may need replaced. Most common cause though is worn teeth.

Two excellent replies that say everything.

Not too expensive to fix; three bearings and/or a used input shaft and 4th sliding gear. Not at all hard to find parts.

This was a very common problem with the H; about the only issue with an otherwise terrific model. As others have stated, the replacement parts are readily available. It does require some labor, however.
