This is the first time in all my years of running old tractors I had a coil go bad. It was on my 184 Cub. Last time I mowed with it starting running rough and got worse the further I went. Almost couldn't
finish the yard. Today I got around to some trouble shooting. After checking timing, the points and making sure I didn't have water in the gas, I was starting to think carb. I needed to put it up for the
winter so I decided just before I did that I would try a different coil. No change so now I'm real sure its the carb. Fortunately I tried a volt meter before I gave up for the season and found I had had 12
volts to the coil, not 6 like my other tractors with 12 volt conversions and I had put on a 6 volt coil. Put on a 12 volt coil I happened to have around and the problem was fixed. I really hate putting up a
tractor for the winter that I know won't be usable when I get it out in the spring.
