3588 no high or low forward

I have a 3588 that has stopped going into high or low range to go forward in any gear. It goes in reverse in all four gears but won't move forward. When I shift between high and low I can see the shaft that comes up out of the transmission hop a little in the middle. Has anyone had any experience with that?

Hummmm , pull the floor plate up under your feet and look at what the outside linkage is doing first , maybe something as simple as a pin falling out or one of the ends came off the shifting rod , Not there to look myself.

yes I've looked under the floorplate the linkage is connected but when I move the lever from low to high, the shaft that its connected to that goes down into the transmission hops up a little bit, about in the middle between low and high. I've read that there's a linkage down inside the transmission on 466s which, from what I've read, is the same. I'd like to be able to fix this myself as its just not worth having it done. I paid 6000 for the tractor 10 years ago. I can imagine that to have it fixed could run me several thousand if it has to be split twice. I have no concrete floor to split it on.

There's two c clips on the hi-lo shift fork if one them came off it would let the rail work its way out. You can see it from the back through the top link cover hole, that shaft can be changed through the back with out splitting by using a long 2/2 extension and a 3/4 deep socket. But the range cover under the seat will have to come off along with the side cover on the left side to get to the reverse fork and key

Well then my guess as i am not there , so here goes . Down under the range trans cover is a cam and there will be a roller on a dowl , you will have a sliding shift fork that will move a collar forward and backwards to engage Hih and low low being towards the rear and high to the ft. . Now what i am thinking is that either the key has sheared in the shifter cam or maybe the shift rail has dropped out . Now to remove the sifter cover this is going to be fun and lots of shell we say colorful words will be used . More then likely you has a extra fuel tank hanging off the left side , yep that's got to go as you need to get to the side cover as rev. shifting fork is behind the clipped corner cover , don't worry about draining the rear end as IF you are at the correct hyd fluid level you will only loose about a gallon when that cover comes off . Next remove the linkage going to the shifter arm on the cover , Then take it out of park and block the rear tires so that the tractor will not move , once you have blocked the tire then the next step is to take it out of park and take a 1;/2 inch bolt and use the head of the bolt to block the park lever up by inserting the bolt head under the lift part of the linkage ,( hope ya see what i am tryen to tell ya) as park loc is heavy spring loaded and must be in the up position. Now remove all the bolts holding down the top cover and then with the aid of two stiff bladed putty knifes take and drive them inbetween the top cover and the main case to break the gskt seal , they are tough to get broke loose , Once ya have it free then lift straight up , Rev. shifter shaft may give ya a small fight. You will see now why i said to remove the side cover as once the shifter shaft comes out of rev. shifter fork it will fall to the side and probably on the ground , now had you not removed this cover going back together would have been a nightmare . Once the cover is out of the way you should see straight off where the problem lies . I have had many of them top covers off on reg two wheel drives . OH wait a min here on the 2+2 that side cover is NOT a side cover it is you drive for the ft. , BUT it will still have to come off . Myself i have never had a 2+2 but have always wanted one , but the back half is pretty much the same as a 1486 . Now IF the High low shifter fork is broken i have sneaked in a couple of then with out getting down into removal of the rock shaft housing . . Ya got more problems then post PICTUERS since i can't be there seeing for myself.

It looks like I need to pull that gearbox off the left side to get access. I'm a little worried that things on the inside will fall down into the oil pan and I'll have a big mess.

h yeah, the rod is what I found in there laying on the bearing housing for the left output shaft.
