Farmall 340 Solenoid Wiring

I went to start my 340 tractor yesterday. It turned over a couple of times and then just clicked. I had ran it the day before. I have a Harbor Freight battery load tester and it tests okay. I took the wiring off the battery and cleaned the connections. Then I cleaned the ground and the connection to the solenoid. Still nothing more than a click. I had it at shop getting some painting done on it and I thought maybe some paint got on the connections, but I cleaned them Anyone got a any pictures of what the wiring to the solenoid is supposed to look like? It should be pretty simple, just a three post solenoid for a six volt tractor.

Diagram I have shows hot battery cable to one side of solenoid, other side to starter. From battery cable connection on solenoid there is red wire to one side of ammeter. Small post on solenoid has orange wire to starter activating switch.

When you had painting done did it get some paint on the mating surface between starter and engine mount?

Make sure battery is well charged. If battery cables have corroded ends or wire replace cables

The starter may be jammed in the flywheel. Rock the tractor violently forward and backward in road gear. if it makes a nice loud click and moves farther that was it. If the fan moves when pushing that is not it. Jim

I do not think the starter was off the tractor, but it is possible that paint is preventing a ground. I figured paint on the positive ground from the battery to the ground bolt had paint on it somewhere but I cleaned it pretty well. Also did the same for the negative wire that goes from the battery to the solenoid. I took off the solenoid and cleaned the connections.

So, on a three post solenoid, am I right there should be hot (negative) wire from the battery (this is a six volt positive wire tractor) to the top bolt on the solenoid. Then on the other side of solenoid there is a wire to connecting to that large bolt too. Then inbetween there is a small wire that I assume connects to the ignition switch.

I own a Farmall 340 and had a problem similar to this. It turned out to be the key switch had a short that only occurred some of the time. Worth a look!

the two large cables are for your battery. the small wire is for your solenoid. when the solenoid is energized by your start switch it closes and allow power to flow from your battery to the starter. an improper ground could be the problem, low battery voltage, solenoid could be bad, starter brushes could be bad. not usually but flywheel problem. if you have a fresh paint job and it was okay before that then I would double check all my contacts first.

I replaced the solenoid, and I also jacked up one rear tire and turned it. There might have been a catch so maybe the starter was stuck. Anyway, tractor started and works fine. Thanks for the help.
