What are the best repair practices for the small latch (the 1/4 inch piece part) that latches the speed control lever?

Do you fill in the worn area with weld and machine it back to spec, or buy a new one, or ?? (new ones are available)

Someone said to just turn the old part 180 degrees, but this one is worn on both sides so turning doesn't help.

Thanks, Ron

sounds like you have the improved throttle. Try your dealer to get the worn part or get a friction disc throttle from ebay.

The "Little Tin Hats" as they called them at FARMALL, with the square slots held and lasted much better than the saw-tooth slots on the early H/M. The square slots were done on a mill in the department I scheduled at Farmall in the mid to late 1970's. Soon as the stampings came in to the plant I'd order them up to the dept. and in a day or two they were done, had the square slots milled, ready to be shipped to IH Broadview Parts center. Couple of the people in the dept. kinda knew what they were but I took pictures to work, showed them the operator normally had left hand on steering wheel and right hand on throttle.
My '51 M still has the square slotted tin hat, SH has a TSC version of the M&W throttle.

The control lever is pretty easy to weld up and grind/file to remake the pawl contour. The Tin hat cover/ratchet is harder when stripped from wear. Welding it up using an oxy acetylene torch works. then shaping and filing the saw tooth notches. If it has the square tooth and notch system, similar hand work is needed. There are many replica parts around. Personally I like the friction controlled lever (M&W design replica) that is considered by most to be acceptable because it was available when the tractor was in production as an accessory. Jim
