Farmall H Running Hot

Final got my 1949 Farmall H thanks to all the help. After adjusting the carb I saw my oil pressure is7l 70 psi at Idle so that is good. My temperature gauge continued to rise into the red and running at Idle for about 5 minutes. I checked the radiator and it is full. I assume the thermostat is not opening. Is the thermostat in the housing behind the radiator and on top of the engine?

David G is correct, don't blame the thermostat. Look in the radiator fill hole to se if there is circulation. Check the real temp with a laser thermometer. If circulation, and the top tank is warm, suspect a bad gauge. Checking the gauge in boiling water is a solid check on accuracy. If no circulation, a internally collapsed hose (like a flap vave) or a failed waterpump impeller can be a cause. Jim

I seem to remember an H I worked on about 20 years ago, that there's a crossbar and a couple of threaded pins which transfer the rotation from the face of the belt pulley to the center impeller shaft.

If any of that were missing or the connection to the impeller shaft is spinning and not positively driving, it all looks good from the outside as its all apparently turning, fan is doing just fine. But the impeller might not be. And that will lead to overheating.

I keep thinking I want to make a restricter plate, but I have been so busy the H does not get run much, and never in the winter.

Check your ignition timing. Retarded timing will cause it to overheat fast, even at idle with no load on the engine.

I know its been awhile but a quick update. I started my tractor today after replacing the thermostat last fall. I watched the coolant through the top of the radiator and say the water was flowing a little while it was warming up. After about 4 minutes at Idle speed, I heard a big gulp of air come out of the radiator and knew the thermostat opened. I added more coolant and the temperature dropped a bunch. The tractor is running correctly and not over heating. I just have a small fuel leak in a fuel line fitting and discovered a hydraulic leak. Hopefully, nothing a wrench can fix. Again, thanks for all the help with my problems.
