I read somewhere about a 9 gear add-on for the transmission for H's or M's. Has anyone read or heard of this. I saw it in a book from a ad from 1950. M-W Gear Inc. Help.

I've got one on my '44 M, makes a great hay rake tractor. The post about the pto was a good point, it does speed up the pto when engaged. It is (of mine is) an internal transmission design. Mine engages with a knob & cable, I've heard that later ones used a lever instead. You see them for sale every once in a while. Probably be a pretty good job to install, but worthwhile if you use the tractor much.

My uncle has an M with the extra gears on it. The way that it is step up is that it adds overdrive to every gear but 5th, even reverse and the PTO. The lever is just a nob the pulls in and out. The speed ranges in the gearing are from slowest to fastest; 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 1st OD, 2nd OD, 3rd OD, 4th OD, and then 5th gear. It nice to have.

These were popular in the cornbelt because 4th gear was too slow to pull a rotary hoe in corn fields. The 9 speed gave a faster speed in 1-4, with road gear being the same. It was an extra gear box that mounted between the clutch and transmission.

One of my M's has a 9 speed, Many of these were called Heisler which I assume was a competitor to M&W gear which also made them. Not sure of the mecanics but it is a nice option. Dick Davis
