another question

To justify many questions, I will say that I have 3 M Farmalls, consequently 3 times as many questions. My distributor is filling with oil. To prevent this
after about 4 or 5 hours of operation I drain the little plate under the distributor. This is a standard M with the belly pump. I probably need bearings or
seals. Is this a difficult job? I have read over and over about putting the distributor in backwards, how do you prevent this? How do I know if I need a new
distributor? Any other suggestions would be appreciated also. Thanks, Ellis

I can help you with the comment - putting the distributor on backwards. What can happen is you put it back off 180 degrees from the engine. If you have the #1 cylinder on top dead center from the compression stroke the rotor should be on or real close to the #1 spark plug wire in the distributor cap. From there you can do timing and get it perfect. Concerning seal, etc that's where a parts catalog comes in handy for me as I can look at the diagrams and see what parts are in there. You might be able to look up a parts diagram on the Case website and see what you need. Not sure what is in there without looking.

there is an oil seal in the distributor/mag drive housing. i am looking at a w-6 manual right now and the part number for the seal is 352080 r 91. should be the same seal as the m.

Ignition drive housing on a M didn't have a seal until the first month of 48. Something is wrong getting that much oil seal or no seal. Crankcase vents clear, oil drain back from housing blocked by sludge or bushing worn out? IH distributor has a seal ring on the shaft. If bushing is okay the distributor needs the drive gear pin removed from the shaft and breaker plate removed after cap, dust plate, points and the terminal stud removed to pull distributor shaft up or out to replace the seal ring. Sounds like you have a later distributor gear housing than a M, maybe it was magneto equipped and has the housing without the seal. If you can find a cast number on the ignition drive housing the one ending in just a D has no seal if I remember correct.

Maybe you are on to something, The engine I have in the tractor is not original. I think the engine is a 1949 and the tractor is a 1947. I had the engine tanked and rebuilt at an IH dealer a few years ago and I am sure they used the parts off the busted engine. Maybe something isn't really compatible. Thanks, Ellis
