460 farmall

I have a 460 that had not been started for a couple years. When I bought it I noticed the hydraulic pump was very noisy. I checked the hydraulic oil and it looked milky. I purchased new oil for it but never got around to changing it. Well I got a renewed interest in it and started it up today. It has been stored inside since I?ve owned it. Anyway I plan to change the hydraulic oil and filter. Would water in the hydraulic oil make the pump noisey or could it be a dirty filter? Thanks in advance.

Well if water got into the pump and sat there I'm suspecting that some rust was formed. That may be causing the noise. Probably be lucky if it don't ruin the pump if that happened.

Checking the filter on the brake side is a must. I sucked a water logged filter in the pump on a 560 once.Plugged filter can make it noisy also, first place to go.

as stated below check the filter first. When I got my 560 the prior owner said there wasn't a hydraulic filter. When I opened the filter housing it looked like something you would find in a baby diaper. I was told that is from the water removal properties of the oil combining with moisture over time. My pump was also toast having run that way too long.

I have two 560's, has the same system.

Change the filter, commonly available at dealer, and this website.

Use Hy-tran, or a suitable equvalent.

There is a seal near the pump that can leak, and suck air, making the pump noisy. Overfilling with hy-tran helps reduce this noise.

When you drain it, there are drains - at rear of machine, at rear of the TA/transmision section, and a small plug under same, near the front of that section.

Definitely change the filter when you change the oil. The hydraulic/lube (UTF) oils are designed to pick up water. If the fluid is at capacity for moisture then the low pressure between a plugged filter and the suction side of the pump could be a factor in the noise.

Be aware that the various universal type fluids come in different weights. There is a 10w based one and a 20w based one. They have 30w based hydraulic oil but I can't remember if it comes in UTF or not.
