574 International Alternator Question

Good Morning from the bayou country!! Gentlemen I have a question concerning the alternator on my 1974 International tractor. It is a 574 model. I have never had any problem with the alternator but while installing a rebuilt starter, I decided to
to check the one wire that goes from the starter solenoid to the
alternator battery connection. The bolt going into the alternator
was not connected--it was just stuck in the bolt hole. There were threads on the bolt but they were not screwed into any thing. I stuck a small screw driver into the hole and it went into the alternator about 3 inches before it hit any metal. Is this the way this bolt is supposed to fit in the alternator? It is basically just floating in the there. Thanks again for your help and for this website! Both are great!! Bayouman74

Just get the right bolt and screw it into the hole.Since you didn't spacify what alerenator,I can only assume.

Are you talking about two different connections?

Diagram I have for a 574 shows a Delco 10DN external regulated alternator with charge wire going from alternator through ammeter to starter solenoid.

What alternator do you have? Is the charge wire connected to the stud on back of alternator? Charge output on alternator should be a well anchored stud with internal connection. The charge wire to alternator connects with a ring connector on the stud and a nut to hold it on. It does not connect with a screw in bolt.

Normal ground for alternator is through the mounting bracket, but Delco alternators have a threaded hole for an added ground if needed. Yours doesn't need it. Is this the bolt you are referring to?

Hey Guys: Thanks for all the help! I got the alternator fixed. It is a 10DN and has 1 stud on the back of the alternator which has a wire that runs to the starter. I took a 1/4" bolt and forced it into the hole where the floating 3/16" stud bolt had been and since the housing on the alternator was aluminum it seems to be a snug fit. Thanks again for the help! bayouman
