1020 governor

Hello everybody, I got a 1928 McCormick 1020 with the old style governor where is only governs at full throttle, the problem I am having is when I am plowing when I drop the plow in the ground the governor is slow to respond, it eventually will catch up but it takes around 10 feet of plowing to happen. This tractor sat since 1959 and we got it running this spring and everything was working fine but now it doesn?t seem to wanna work. Thanks

It may get better after running a while. IH governors from that time were slow. It could also be worn after all the years of use. If your not stalling out I wouldn't worry about it.

Ok, it just bugs down a little when you drop the plow in the ground and then catches up. I am also plowing alfalfa so that doesn?t help either. As long as I don?t kill it I?m fine cause I don?t wanna have to crank any more than I have too haha

My Grandpa had those governors on his 15-30 and Farmall Regular. Apparently, he didn't like how his reacted, either, because he switched both of them to aftermarket Pierce governors. When we restored them, we went back to the origional ones, and noticed that one of them had a spring missing. Might have been kind of a conversation piece, if we had left the Pierce governors on them.

Me, I would examine all the connections to make sure they aren't binding, these
are pretty easy to get to. Only problem I ever had with assembly is making sure
the carb connection is lined up correctly. The only place I can think of right
this minute that might bind would be the pivot at the front end of the carb
connection casting, right where your control lever is under that cap with two
screws. I have had a couple of these stuck right there, couldn't get the pin out
but freed it up with penetrating oil and working it back and forth manually.
I refrain from recommending penetrating oil brand to use as we don't want world
war three today. LOL.
