Questions about improved starter drive YT sells

Thanks to the help and discussion here, I was able to put the new drive on my starter. As suggested here, I got the improved drive from YT. It is back on the tractor and works well. I also cleaned the commutator with 600 grit sandpaper.

Is there a trick to get a screw driver on the set screw of the newer style drive? Out of the box it is half covered and the part covering it would not budge with my hand strength. I scratched my head for several minutes then gently used a vice and pushed back on the mechanism and was able to just barely expose the screwhead enough to get a screw driver on it. Seems like there may be a trick to this, I don't know? Here is photo of what I am talking about.

I just put one on. Took screwdriver in hole and back out far enough to slide down shaft. Helps to put gear litely clamped in vise so can pry down on washer and stick another screwdriver in gap.

I ended up doing something similar. I think YT should add a short insert in the package to describe how to initially back the screw out. Or offer the instructions on the web page. It took me about 10 minutes to figure things out and the first five minutes was spent wondering if the part was defective, haha.

The other issue I ran into during reassembly was getting the brushes around the commutator. I'd be interested in hearing how folks do that. I could have used a second pair of hands on that part. I ended up actually looping a string around two of the brushes so I could pull them both back at the same time and the third one I moved with a screwdriver as I slid the parts together.

I have seen some end plates have a hole by each of the brushes so that you can use a pin to lock the brush in a backed off position for re assembly. But the string method may be more common.

For the brushes I just let them set endways in my lap then from the end push one brush out then the next and so on. The endways pressure will hold then as you go around sometimes I have to hold one with my finger or a screwdriver for a second. Never tried the string deal.
