Diesel Fuel Line

So, in doing a final cleaning of the fuel lines before installing the new lift pump on my British 444, I noticed that the fuel line is cracking from the flare at the tank fitting for about two inches. The part isn't easily replaced with an off the shelf part. Since the tractor is gravity fed from the tank to the water separator, is there any issue with me using rubber or plastic fuel line as long as it is diesel compatible?

I would also like to cut in an inline fuel filter as an added layer of protection until I get the time to do a proper job of the fuel tank.

Thoughts? Pics of conversions? My only concern is the banjo fitting at the water separator.

"line is cracking from the flare at the tank fitting for about two inches"

Are you SURE it's cracked?

Is it leaking?

At 2" long, it sounds more like a mark left from manufacturing the line than a crack.

Yes it is cracked and leaking. I can pry it apart at the flange where the two edges do not meet.

Hi HappyJack, those fuel lines tended to cracked caused by the vibration of the Diesel engine. Yes you can replace it with a
flexible fuel line that is Diesel fuel compatible. The banjo fittings are just brazed onto the fuel line and can be removed by
heating. I would be concerned about putting an inline filter in the fuel line before the lift pump as most fuel filters require
some pressure to flow properly.

Thanks Jim. My other concern with an inline filter was space: the line runs very close to the body of the tractor and there isn't much room.

I had a leak on my h4 diesel 0n the return line. it had rubbed a hole in it right next to the fitting. I just cut both ends off and spliced a rubber hose on it. works fine. don't see why you cant do that.

pinball: That was my first thought, however, the crack starts at the flange for the fitting at the tank end and extends at least 2 inches. I'm thinking I can cut the line after the split and splice on a section of flexible line but will likely need to change the fitting at the tank.
