Coil hook up ?

Not a thing. They will even work backwards. Best is negative to points is negative ground, or positive to points if positive ground. Jim

A coil hooked up backward also has a spark that jumps backwards and is a little weaker.

The coil most likely doesn't suffer any undue harm if wired opposite its labeled polarity, but its not as efficient as if hooked up correctly, even though sure it will still produce a spark if wired opposite. Coil manufacturers don't take the time trouble and expense to place those little + and - symbols on the terminal if it made no difference BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY IT DOES. Ive never seen coil instructions that say ignore those labels and wire it anyway you please lol. NOTE on some coils instead of + and - you see BAT instead but its still labeled that way so it gets connected the right way. If it made NO difference the coil manufacturers probably wouldn't put those labels on there, don't ya reckon ??

Its your tractor and your money so wire it anyway you like even if you prefer to connect it backwards from the labels.

Thinking about the idea of a Bat label. The idea would work only if the coil was made for that vehicle/polarity. Bat would not be correct if the battery polarity was changed, or the coil was fitted to a vehicle of opposite polarity. Jim

After reading this I happened to go out and look at a used 6 volt coil that a guy gave me last week. Incredibly, the posts on it were labeled "batt." and "dist." I had never seen that before.
So how WOULD you hook that up? Could one assume that the "dist." post is +, since most 6 volt systems in those days were positive ground? Just curious.

Very god chance it is for a + ground system but to be sure one would have to wire it up and then watch the direction the spark jumps.
