560 Diesel Block heater

The machine shop's finally finishing up the head and I figured since I have easy access it might be a good idea to put a block heater in. Since the CNH ones are discontinued have you guys found a Kats/other that has worked good without leaking/blowing out? Also, is there a particular frost plug that it is recommended to be installed in and does it matter if the element is pointed up/down/left/right?

Thanks,
Dan

(quoted from post at 18:24:20 10/16/18) My NAPA store can still get frost plug heaters. Put two 400 watt heaters in the 460 block years ago, sure warmed up good with two.

Did you just ask them for a 460 diesel block heater or just one for a D282 engine? Two smaller 400's compared to one 600 sounds interesting.

D236 and D282 early blocks take the same size plug heaters. I have a late block in my 560 now, takes the heavy press fit sleeves. Frost plug wall is too thick for the heater strap to hold in place like it does on the early slip fit sleeve blocks so there's no block heaters in it now.

You might try a Zerostat 3100061.

If no local seller, there's dozens of places to buy them on the 'net.
