Farmall A steering box swap out

Hello all, I have a 45 A that my steering is very sloppy and my front wheels wobble back and forth like crazy. I have a parts tractor that the steering is nice and tight on and would like to swap out the gearbox. How hard is this task to do? Thanks for your help! Brad

Not hard at all really. You will have to take everything off in front of the engine; radiator & grill, disconnect the steering shaft, then remove the front axle & steering box. If you have all the tools and are a little handy with mechanical things it shouldn't take more than a couple hours.

Support the tractor securely so it doesn't fall and be careful with the steering box because it is heavy.

Like Dave says, not hard. However it would be helpful(but not necessary) to have a hoist available.Second on jacking/blocking it securely. Don't want anything to fall.

brad,

those that have done this before, are getting it done lots easier than someone who has not done it before.

i suggest that you get someone who has done it and help them. otherwise, you will spend probably one, and most likely two days making the change. cause you have to pull box from both tractors. you need a hoist.

Are the tie rods tight and how about the drag arm coming off the steering housing check those first. All the tie rods are adjustable for wear even where they connect to the drag link. Jack the tractor up and wiggle the tires that can show where the play is. The steering box is the last place to check for play.
