McCormick Deering 10-20

Hi,
My father has recently got an McCormick Deering 10-20 (1930s something), which he intend to restore - at least so that it runs!

He is wondering what the knob marked in the green circle is. It can be moved up or down. Is this used for starting/stopping the engine; to give spark to the spark plugs? If not, what is it used for, and what is the correct position/use?

Any feedback is much appreaciated.

if your talking about the lever going to magneto, then up is to stop engine.for starting move it just off the stop position then crank the engine. full down is full advance and "may' kick you when starting.all depends on who has the timing set up at.once running can move lever down.

Thanks a lot, rustred! Yes, you understood my question :) We have ordered new spark plugs, and will try to start it later according to your advice.
