Super C carburetor

My Super C has a Carter carb on it that needs some work. The tractor has always run good, but starts really hard when cold. Per a friend I checked the throttle shaft in the carb and it has a lot of side to side play.

I have read several people say the Zenith is superior to the Carter carb. Can you tell me why? I am trying to decide if I should just buy a new Zenith or try to repair my Carter.

Thanks,
Dan

While some throttle shaft wear sure isn't a GOOD thing, it's HIGHLY unlikely that's the main cause of hard starting when cold.

Is the cable/linkage set correctly so the choke plate closes TIGHTLY, and is the spring-loaded relief plate intact and sealing snuggly?

AFAIK, I don't think the throttle shaft has bushings, but I'll bet the brass shaft is worn a LOT more than the bore in the cast iron piece, so replacing the shaft SHOULD tighten it up quite a bit.

Is it normal for gas to run out of the carb when i try using the choke for a couple of seconds? I always shut the choke off when this
happens figuring i am flooding it. It never smells flooded though out of the exhaust.

You can get new gaskets for the Carter, but nothing else. Not even a new float. Also, the Carter is made of aluminum and is prone to warping. Go with the Zenith, or a Marvel-Schebler.

I know very little about carbs. Is the Zenith 12911 the correct carb for a Super C? It is listed as a replacement for a C and a Super C.
Wouldn't the Super C be jetted differently than a C? This carb is listed as a replacement for 375560r91, which is the CIH part number.

After market carburetors are often "generic" and will work on several different models. The market demand is not strong enough to build carburetors that are specific to just one model.

The Carter on my Super C was rebuilt by a dealer before I bought the tractor about 28 years ago, started good if the plugs weren't fouled but carb. was always too rich, smoked and sometimes would just start dripping setting in the shed for a month or two without being run. I probably had it apart fifteen times in ten years with out much success. Here's a pict. of the Zenith part # on it now. Runs perfect, no drips, no smoke. It did however run a little lean starting it in super cold weather. I finally shaved a hair out of the main jet a few years ago and it's good now.

If you want to rebuild the Carter carburetor, Steiner (external_link dot com) has a rebuild kit for it that has a replacement throttle shaft. It is their part number ABC231. You might give that a try before you replace the carburetor... I replaced a carburetor a couple years ago, and found the lowest price for a new Zenith carburetor to be from McDonald Carburetor (mcdonaldcarb dot com), their part 14007. It has worked well, and I've had no problems with it.

When I purchased my 1953 Super C in 2006 it had a Carter UT (original to the tractor) and would never start or run very well. After being
rebuilt numerous times by about everyone in this area around five times without ever running very well I obtained a NOS Zenith from Justin
Weber at a Red Power Round-up. The carburetor was of the IH part number listed in the Super C IHC Parts Catalog as being the correct one for
the Super C tractor. Never have had another issue with the NOS Zenith I replaced the Carter with. Since then I have also replaced the
Carter that was original to my Farmall 140 with a new Zenith from Tisco and again carburetor issues just went away. On my Farmall 240 which
still has the original Zenith carburetor it was cleaned and rebuilt when I restored the tractor in 2014 but it ran fine even then before the
rebuild except for the issues related to the fuel tank which required a different tank due to a failed clean and seal application by a
previous owner. Very happy with my Zenith carburetors on all my 123 cu. in. Farmalls, HTH, Hal.
