A guy called me about an original 1668 hour 1066 open station. Was within 40 miles so I took the trailer. In reality it had a aftermarket tach and nice repaint and had even been O.Hd when I spoke to original owner who removed cab and had it painted. The question it has a 540/1000 double pto set up that works but top 1000 shaft is broke off.I have had some and wondered how big of a job it is to replace shaft.I know they are easy to remove compared to JD but know shaft just doesn't come out with clip. Thanks Don't know how you could break a shaft like that!I was disappointed as nice low houred original are hard to find but still might buy it

It's just a guess, but it might of been bent, if you had someone who study's metallurgy, to look at it, he could tell you what happened!
Maybe they had it on a haybuster haygrinder, their tough on anything!

I broke mine once. Was my fault. They can be bent but to break one you really have to work at it. backing up a big square baler and did not see the bale. Got the draw bar too. Lots of tuition on that one.

to replace a broken pto shaft you have to take the whole housing that the 2 shafts stick out of. you have to drain the hydrulic oil or get the nose down on the tractor. we use to back them up on the drive that went up to the hay loft on the barn. take the top link plate off this will help when you put it back in. i use to be able to put them in and out by my self but at 62 they are getting too heavy. if you have a lift it would work better. take the bolts out that hold the housing to the transmission start sliding the unit out watch the coupling that drives the unit through the top link hole try not to let the coupling fall off the shaft it goes on a certain way. as you slide the unit out it has to be tipped down there is an oil pickup tube that could be bent if your not carefull. there was an artice in red power magazine on how to do it your self. the guy made the tools to take it apart.i would just take it to a dealer there is a ginormus spring that has to be compressed and a snapring removed. after its fixed slide the unit back in be carefull of the pickup tube then have the dealer come out an set the pto pressure.there is a special adapter to hook to a pressure guage.

As a kid I broke the 540 shaft on one of our 706's. I was mowing with a cut-ditioner hooked to the fast hitch. It started grinding dirt and my first instinct was to raise the tongue. A big bang and the mower stopped. Did not hurt the pto shaft on the mower. I got to trade places shelling corn at the neighbor's while dad took the front mount cultivator off the other 706 and finished mowing. Then he mounted the cultivator onto the tractor with the broken pto and finished the day cultivating. I think we locked the fast hitch lift arms into the frame brackets after that. We had to do that with the manure spreader as it would raise the drawer when nearly empty.
