M farmall belt question

I have a m farmall. I am fixing to add hydraulics to it. I was given a belt driven hydraulic pump. I can tie it into the alatanor water pump belt but i had rather tie in and you the belt that comes off the crankshaft but it is to wide. Can i put a narrower belt on the crankshaft if so how norrow can i go?
Thanks

Do you have two drive sheaves on the crankshaft now ? That's the first i would do, is get that extra sheave,if you can find one,and go from there, or else you might have to heavy up the timing gears in front and run it live off there !!

A second pulley on the crank is best. It would need to be fabricated to be attached to the original (buy an original and have a machine shop create the second and attach it would be best) The second would have a more standard width. As gene noted, the wide belt can be replaced by a narrower one (easily). Make sure the new belt does not run in the bottom of either the crank pulley or the WP pulley or it will slip all the time. Make strong mounts to hold your pump solidly and adjustable. The OEM belt should be pretty loose, the new belt will need to be tight enough to not slip (with a pressure regulator in the system). Do not over tighten the new belt. The generator belt is also possible, but less powerful and dependent on the OEM fan belt. Jim
