Missing screws and flange on Super A starter????

My Super A's starter stopped engaging so I took it off and found the big spring in the bendix had broken.

I was surprised that the starter came completely apart with just the two long bolts that hold the cover on the armature. In other words, when I took the cover bolts out, the cover came off as expected but the drive/bendix also came out of the nose piece.

There is no flange or screws holding the armature and drive to the nose piece. Shouldn't there be? Did some starters only rely on the two long bolts to hold the cover and the nose piece in place? Does it matter? I've had this tractor for three years and the starter has been fine until the spring broke recently.

I didn't think to look at the nose piece to see if there are two additional holes, for a flange, but I can check when I get back to the shop.

Two bolts on most. Use a replacement clutch type drive (available here on YT) not the spring type. Jim

Thanks for the fast response. I'd never taken one apart and the two or three videos I watched on line all had the extra flange and screw.

Also, I did order the improved ratchet style from this site. Also watched videos about it! Seems easy and straight forward to put on as long as you don't run it out too far prior to installation. I'll be sure to be careful in that regard!

Thanks again.

You cant install out too far as the bolt holding the drive needs to go into the hole on the armature. Why not clean the commutator end and the slots maybe even new brushes.

Thanks Gene. I understand about the drive going on at the existing hole in the shaft. I was referring to warnings I saw online that say you can have problems if you spin the drive out to far by hand before installing it. I guess it must be a fairly common mistake. There's a bunch of videos showing how to get it to go back in if it happens.
