I have a problem with my gas 424. The electric solenoid that is on the carb that is suppose to open up and let fuel flow by means of a rod that goes down into the carb and opens up a jet will not operate. I have called and looked everywhere I know to look and am getting no where. It is a MS carb.

NOT sure if you are looking for advice on testing it, or if you've determined it's bad and are looking for a new one.

They appear to be readily available through your local FIAT/dba CIH dealership for some $80. Part number is 389679R95.

You might check with some aftermarket sellers such as Mark's Carburetion to see if they have a better price, or can offer an adjustable main jet kit to eliminate it.

That being said if you are SURE the solenoid has failed, simply clip the extended needle off and put it back in place to plug the hole and see how the tractor runs.

There's MANY tractors and combines that have had that done and work very well with no further "mods" or expense.

Thanks Bob. The tractor quit on me while bush hogging on a hot day on a steep hill side. I wanted to ask before I clipped the rod off the solenoid.

To test it, take it out and hook a hot wire from a battery pos post to the wire, and touch the threads of the solenoid to the neg. It should retract, and then expand as soon as you break the connection. A test light to the wire on the tractor will tell you if the wiring is OK.

It would not retract when I hooked a battery to it so I clipped the rod off and reinstalled and she fired right up. Thanks everyone for the help.
