changing starter switch

How hard is it to change the starter switch? I have a 1954 super h with the starter switch on the starter. The starter switch is bad and I want to put it in the dash or some where else.

The problem is not the switch location, it is attaching the cable needed, to the starter motor. When the old switch (saddle type) is removed, you will find a copper lug sticking out of the side of the motor casing. This lug is the starter's contact within the switch. To attach a cable the starter lug would need to be drilled and threaded for a bolt to hold the cable, or taken to an electric motor shop to have a bolt style stud installed to replace the lug.
Most of the time a saddle switch can be fixed by elongating the mounting holes to allow it to contact the lug better. Even new saddle switches may need the holes modified to allow contact. Drilling and attaching needs to use a 1/4" 20 thread/inch short bolt and careful drilling and tapping to keep from ruining the portion of the lug going through the starter housing. Replacing the lug with a stud and refreshing the starter would be my choice. I also caution you about the replacement button switches found today. moat are not well built and handle the job for a short time only. Getting a 300 amp rated manual switch is possible, but spendy. Putting a relay (called a solenoid) instead of the mechanical switch allows a small push button to be used. Jim

Easy to change the original switch to another original one but hard to go with just the push button switch. Just remove the 2 hold down screws clean up the part on the starter and bolt down a new one simple as that of pay a lot of $$ to have the part on the starter replaced with a stud so you can then use a cable set up

The same switch was used on my 1950 case DC3. I replaced it with a ford solenoid and a john deere key switch that I had in my spare parts inventory.

If you could find a 300 to 450 gas starter at a good price it would work. They have the magnetic starter switch mounted on them. Existing battery cable would work and you would just need a simple push button switch mounted where you want to operate. Don't know if your running 6 or 12 volt. Part of the 350 and 450 were 12 and others 6 volt. Propane and diesel starters were bigger than yours.
