H and M starter button

Anyone know why IH mounted the start button on a M to be run with your foot, and the H was run by hand. Why not be the same?? There must have been a reason. Al

I've seen M's with the button behind the starter post mounted to a gas tank bracket and actuated with a foot peddle. I've seen just as many M's with it attached on the steering post where its easy to just push by hand. My H and M are the same. I don't know it changed with the years or based on the model or just preference of the operator. On an M it does come real close to the shifting lever so maybe the correct way is mounted to the gas tank bracket.

One of those mysterys of the universe. I move the switch on one of my Ms up on the post. It's a lot easier to push with my thumb than to find it with my toe.

I grew up with M s and all of them had foot lever by steering post.

The earlier Hs had the starter button to be foot operated also. I don't when it was moved up to the steering post, but that is where all of mine are now located. Including my 1940 M.

Yeah, they moved them around, seeming at random...

The thing about having it foot operated is, it frees up a hand to work the throttle. My Super H takes three hands to start because the switch is saddle mounted on the starter and is actuated by a pull rod.

I was told by my dad that it depended on the year.Alot of the older models got changed over the years by the owners. We have a few h and m,s and they are different depending on the year.

If it was a permanent production change to the post in it might have been from customer feedback about manure from boots causing the switches to corrode
I had a floor mounted dimmer switch in a 66 Chevy pickup that failed from corrosion.
