Busted Block

So, on my early A that I'm restoring I removed the pulley from the crankshaft and then the cover from the front of the engine. But as soon as took off the cover a chunk of metal hit the floor. The right side that bolts to the front end was cracked and evidently held in place by the cover. Is this block toast or can it be welded? It looked like there was some weld on it that I didn't see earlier due to being covered with dirt and grease. I really hate to look for another block.

Probably better off with a different block. Welding cast iron is an art of it's own to some extent. It will need to be preheated then cooled very slowly. If there are any oil galleries or water jackets it will probably not be practical to weld and keep them open for flow. Just my opinion and only worth what you paid for it.

An A Farmall uses the engine as a part of the frame. No other part connects the front wheels to the rear of the tractor. They break when the tractor is run into a ditch or hits a solid object, or is overloaded in some way. If you want to spend enough to have it repaired so it will be as strong as the original, you will spend way more than a different block. Jim

I've found that the opinions I get here are worth more than the ones I've paid to get. I've also found that I'm taken more seriously at the parts store if I wear dirty jeans and tee-shirt instead of stopping by after work in a suit and tie.

I've seen a C or Super C that was brazed together in the front, some old timer did a nice looking job. One of my brothers dropped a new Super C in a wash out mowing first crop hay, snapped the front off completely. No fix for that one.

I agree replace the block. As for a tractor guy wearing a suit and tie to me that just seems hilarious. Nothing against you, I just can?t picture a tractor guy having a suit and tie job, probably way more out there than I think. My dad...rest his soul... was a small farmer in Kansas, but come Sunday he would be in his suit for church. I had some additional email conversation with a poster here that informed me he was a multi millionaire I had no reason to doubt him and I have no idea if his business required him to wear a suit.

Yeah, the suit and tie thing is a little different. My profession is health care and people in my area find it hard to believe that I have a "gearhead gene" as I tell them (some don't understand the term "gearhead"). When I go to the parts counter I don't have the gift of friendly banter that I hear from the guy on the stool next to me that just got off his dozer to check on a hydraulic hose he ordered. My brother, on the other hand, is a pro with the banter. He'll start off with, "Hey, ya'll sell any parts in here that works?" or "Ya'll need to open on Sunday cause my mower don't know the days of the week." When checking out it's "I need that price ya'll have in that notebook hidden under the counter." But, I am what I am.
