I ended up putting the MD starter into the 'franken tractor. It has 12 teeth on the drive, not 10 like the 400 starter does.Fits and engages the flywheel perfectly.I learned something.

by the time you get it up and running you will be able to do the next one a little easier!! I have a jeep that has parts from different years and vehicles. I keep track of all the part numbers when I get a replacement part so I don't have to frustrate the parts guys again. Your project is even more involved so do you do something similar? Or maybe your memory is better than mine.

Glad it did the trick. I don't know why I remembered this as it was probably 30 or 40 years ago that it came up that diesels used a different drive tooth count, also there was something said about WD 9 starter and drives look like they work but don't due to opposite rotation as they mount from the front side of bell housing. Maybe right or not? I don't know. Leroy

Back in my first post on this subject I advised you that starters were limited to the MD starter or a few others. Later I figured it was another thing missing or bad on the MD since you put the 400 starter on. Starter ring gear on flywheel comes to the same place for a 11 or 12 inch flywheel.

I am having problems getting my starter to turn over. It will not turn over on tractor (Farmall140 1963)
The battery may be bad, going to get it tested today.
If I pull starter off tractor and remove starter switch the starter will turn by applying battery charger directly by passing the switch.
Could it be the charger does not have enough amperage to turn the starter over by going through the switch. Very puzzling here !

Can anyone help me here please.
Thanks

things I would check. 1- good battery charged up. 2- all connections clean. 3 good cables of right size. 4 did it just quit working. 5- is the switch / solenoid working. 6 is the starter / ring gear jammed, if so rock engine with crank, fan, wheel in gear what ever it takes,7 does the starter need repair such as brushes ect. many battery chargers will not turn over an engine. hope this gets you some things to start with.

You cant use a battery charger to start a tractor (or anything much bigger then a small lawn mower. A starter motor can draw 350 amps. Even a booster charger is limited to0 150 amps for a very short time. When out of the tractor it turns because it is free of load. Most "new" starter switches are not rated for the real starter draw. Junk. So between using a charger, a potentially bad battery, and a possibly bad starter switch it won't start. Jim

Thanks Jim, That was my feelings with the starter out It would engage and spin without the starter button on but not with it on. Going through that switch ( which is new) it would not turn...just not enough amps from battery charger.
I had the battery tested and it is bad. UGH there goes $100 bucks
I will get a new battery and try again in a couple days. I repainted the tractor and am going to put it for sale. Need for it to start first ! LOL
Thanks for your help..Gary

Thanks Leroy,
I had battery tested and it is bad. I did clean all connection..what is the third wire you talk about ?
The starter switch is new.
I think it just because I was trying to get the starter to turn out of the tractor and the battery charger was not enough amps to turn it through the button switch. Starter did turn when I applied the battery charger directly to starter.
Need to buy new battery and try again on tractor.
Thanks for advice..Gary
