[b:e490c15de1]Yo 300U users---fyi re repair vs. replace starter. Couple months ago I was here asking about replacing the bendix on my 300 starter--few guys were kind enough to give me some advise and I then opted to replace my bendix with the "improved" version----Here's my advise re same---DO NOT attempt it unless you are very well versed on such repairs. The unit available here is neither simple or easy to install!! I thought I did it right---until yesterday, when my started grenaded itself. Tearing it down, it appears as tho I really screwed up the bendix replacement. Tried to save a couple hundred bucks--ended up spending it anyway, plus the original bendix cost!!! Best regards, Mike Mc.[/b:e490c15de1]

I had the starter go bad on my 300U a few years ago and I wish I knew the starter guy I know now and had it repaired. I went to NAPA for a rebuilt starter. There are a lot of variations depending on where the bendix mounts. There is not a lot of room to get it onto the tractor. The first starter lasted about a week and went bad. The second one lasted from fall to spring but never sounded good right out of the box. I'm now on the third one and sounds terrible but works OK. If you know someone I would have it repaired.

It is a totally different device, and does require fiddling to understand and get it correct. We have no way of understanding the experience base of posters , I probably was one
that recommended the drive, as it has worked for literally thousands. The starter may have had shaft issues before the repair. Grenading usually is the result of the starter
relay sticking on, or the drive failing to freewheel in the run direction. Jim

Replaced my 340 U diesel starter and after over cranking I burned it up.
I was pleasantly surprised when they warranted it even after I told the
parts guy it was my fault. Sometimes when you pay up for parts that's how
it goes, a quality rebuilder doesn't have to deal with much warranty so
when he does its all about return customers.
I was so happy with them that I replaced the glowplug wiring and glowplugs,
added a block heater and rebuilt the fuel pump so I wouldn't be trying my
luck all over again. Besides all that, that starter is a royal pain to
replace and I have better things to spend time on. Pay up, play up.

I have stated my opinion on this before. A good auto-electric shop is a blessing in regards to starters, gennys, and alternators. There is a fella just a couple miles from the farm who I take all of the above to. He sorts it out quick. When it needs repairs, he does them and charges a fair price. When it is something simple he usually just tweaks it and gives it to me no charge or charges a token fee if he has to put in a small part. I believe if I added up both sides of the ledger he has saved me money by keeping me from fixing what is not broken. I don't buy new, I always fix the old where possible. I just believe the old stuff is much better overall.

Yes, and I have also stated it before, that good auto electric shops are far and few between. If you live near a large city you MIGHT have one.

Don't get me wrong, there are auto electric shops out there but they are mostly in the business of core exchange. They don't actually fix anything in the shop, and if they do, they are more often than not total hacks.

AGREED. The two in town were just terrible. I was never even sure I got the original case back because no matter what I told them, they painted the outside. I was going to start marking them when I found this fella. He seems like the real deal. It was getting to the point that I was getting the same starter fixed every two years but that has stopped. My current guy is in the middle of nowhere...a one man shop.

There must be something in the air. My Super A's starter messed up yesterday. It spins but doesn't engage. I'm sort of in the same boat as mr. credneck. It seems like it's probably not the flywheel since it happened three times in a row after pull starting. I'll take it apart and see what I can see and then decide if I need to take it to a shop or fix it myself.

Any trouble shooting insight is welcome.

Yo again---first, I gotta say how impressed I am with this site. Was surprised last time--and, again this time, with you guys willing to take the time to pitch in with advise/commentary. Thank you all. I'm not real savvy on this friggin' voo-doo machine, or, for that matter, on how to use forums like this one, so, hopefully, I'm replying in proper form.
I thought about checking with a rebuilder, but, as a couple of you guys alluded to, ain't got a good one readily available!!Got one who STARTS his quote with at least 2 zeroes after a first number--which is NEVER one; so, I opted for the reman starter here. The Yesterday's Tractor customer service folks were very helpful, courteous, knowledgeable both times I've ordered stuff; so, I ordered the starter yesterday and it was already shipped this morning when I called to check on it.
Good to know I got a place to git help, guys. Was starting it to move it into my shop to work on what I HOPE is a float problem in carb. Ol' girl is suddenly kinda cranky with me. Kinda like dealin' with my wife, ay? One thing after another!!!
Thanks again for the input. I'm prob'ly gonna be buggin' y'all again shortly!! Best Regards. Mike
