I got the hand crank shaft loose on my H

It sticks out around 4in. Dosnt seem to be spring mounted. I cant get it to find the catches on the inner part that is spring mounted and goes into the crank shaft pulley. That part looks froze for life. hard to get any spray in around it too.

The front half should be the spring loaded side. You will need to keep oiling and turning to get the spring working. Our H will get stiff from lack of use since we don't crank it by hand. I don't remember the last time it was hand cranked. That grease fitting under neath will help keep it loose. I try to push ours in some and turn it by hand without the crank when I grease the tractor. The back half should turn with the engine, so if it doesn't turn the engine must be either stuck, or turns hard from good compression.

There may be some broken parts. The front bolster needs to be totally removed from the tractor for access to all of the hand crank mechanism.

Humm, a Caterpillar Guy answering a question about a Farmall. Yep he is a really knowledgeable person his reply seems a little misleading on this. I have attached a link to the IH parts page to clarify. In this case what he says is a little confusing. Part 28 is what has the spring on it and slides back towards the crankshaft to engage on the pin through the crankshaft to turn it. These can get stuck or rusted really tight. The shaft that sticks out of the front connects to that part with a pin through an enlongated hole which allows it to crank at an angle instead of straight on dead center. So if you can turn or move that front shaft forward or back more than a quarter inch with out that back piece moving something is indeed broke. Most likely pin No. 43, hope this helps good luck.
Farmall H crank & crank lol

Red: I'm glad you explained it better than I did. I have never actually looked at an exploded view of the crank mechanism in the frontend. I have how ever used the method to start ours way back when. I was refering to the front half meaning that the spring was not on the crankshaft end. Sorry if it was confusing.
As for the Caterpillar Guy I tend to like my caterpillar tractors and engines better than most of the others. We have several IH tractors as the steel tracks and paved roads don't play well together.

not trying to nnalert Red's reply, I scanned this from my parts book and enlarged the topic area.

hope this helps

I looked at mine and find that part #28 that you say is frozen, is frozen into the face of the bolster that is about 3/8" thick.
If you remove one wheel and then turn the steering all the ways over there should be enough room to get up in there and work it free.
