my tractor wont start. pulled the plug and wasn't getting any fire. was getting gas. bought set of points/condenser. put them in and still no fire. checked voltage at distributor and with the points out I am getting 12 volts on the inside screw that goes through the distributor housing. with point/condenser installed it read zero. maybe I am grounded out . anyone have any suggestions . thanks norm

With the points open you should have voltage there, points closed-no voltage if no voltage with open points you have a short to ground in your installation that needs corrected.

When installing points it is easy to short out the condenser wire. Or you may have a bad new condenser. I have not replaced condensers in over a decade because of so many of them being bad.

take an ohm metter and put one lead on the wire that connects to the points and the other lead to the case if the needle moves the condenser is shorted out and is junk. the needle should not move

Something seems wrong if 12vdc is present right at the points...this system is designed to run at 6vdc. Even with a 12v conversion it should have the resistor to drop the supply voltage down to 6v. There is a starter solenoid which bypasses the resistor and applies the full 12v to the ignition but this is only to aid in starting.

It is of course possible to go to a 12v coil. The points are just a switch so they really don't care, but my guess is the original condenser is not going to have a long life run at 2x nominal voltage.

Just because you measure 12V doesn't mean you have current. I've run into situations where the ignition switch is bad. You measure 12V but no fire. Bypass the switch with a direct wire from the battery to the coil, and boom, it's running again.

If bypassing makes it start, your work is not done. Still could be cruddy wiring, or the switch.
