As I said in my last post, I am new to owning a tractor and I am not completely sure how to operate one. I can't quite get the timing and throttle down yet.It almost sounds like a cylinder is missing or not firing. Does anyone know what this might be? What needs adjusted?[/img]

With it running, you can short each plug to ground (or pull the wire off if it has rubber boots) to find a missing cylinder. It
should run smoothly at all speeds. When you find a missing cylinder, change its spark plug with a different cylinder that is
firing. If the misfire follows the plug, that plug is bad. A compression check is the diagnosis that will find major faults. Jim

that is a dying art...and so are the people that used to run them. now the computers run tractors and your only sitting there to observe things. pretty sad. man is loosing out to technology and robots. i get great satisfaction cranking up my 1939 WD40 Mccormick , i am pretty sure you could stop 1000 guys on a street and ask if they could start this tractor and the answer would be no. what i am getting at is get someone familiar with the tractor as he can tell you which spark plug is not firing just by looking at it.

For what its worth and many will argue so go ahead. Dad was born in 1922 and farmed many years, his statement on F series Farmalls was if you wanted them to hit right and not sound like intermittent missing you had to forget the books .020 something for a spark plug gap that was used when they were running distalate or kerosene and open them up to .032-.035 for modern gasoline. Also many have said they won't run right on newer Champion spark plugs, you should use Autolite. I don't have an F-20 so no opinion just passing on what I've been told. Leroy

I have a F14 - interesting idea on the point gap. I've had Champion plugs in mine since I bought it in 1988 with no problems. It does start easier with a hotter plug.

Find out what cylinder is missing. Change plugs around. If missing moves to different cylinder, bad plug. If not,
try a different plug wire. F-20s were bad about valves sticking open if left set for awhile. (Valve spring won't
close valve all the way). No compression on that cylinder will be the result with sticking valve.
