I am replacing the front wheel bearings on a Farmall M. Pretty easy job for a change. I am currently waiting on bearing kits from Case/IH. I bought from them because it is the only place to get the grease retainers that keep the grease from filling the wheel cavities. The wheels are the old style that clamp on like the rears. Anyway, if you will look at the pictures I have 2 options. The tractor had the extension pieces through the bearing covers, I think for a corn picker???? If I use these I will have to get new seals and probably ready sleeves, If I use the yellow bearing covers I can saw off the extensions and just use the bolt part to hold the wheel bearings. Ideas and suggestions?? Thanks Ellis

Keep the existing nuts, and buy castle nuts from fasenall to do it right. 9or used nuts from a salvage yard. Jim
 
Does the bolster have cotter pin holes for using a notched nut? If not I would just cut those off since they look plenty worn and use the pinch bolt to retain. Early nuts look about like those without the extra on ends. Around later 49 they started using about a 5/16 thick washer and notched nut that was cotter pin retained and should work for you also unless no pin holes in bolster. Cut old nuts or newer type if bolster pin holes, all would work.
 
You should have looked around a little better. There are other places that's cheaper to get the bearings and those grease retainers.
I'm currently waiting on a set of bearings and seals I ordered from our local farm supply store. Not putting those grease retainers back in as I'm using regular wheel bearing grease. It's a lot better now then back in '47. And no more use then it will see I'm sure it will be just fine. I did have a little trouble finding a seal that would work but finding some old bearing/seal crossover number books we got it figured out. Between that and measuring everything.
