TA on an IH666

Hi;
I have this heavily repaired ($$$!) 666 with a TA. But I don't have a manual for this thing.
Can I shift the TA whenever I want? Only when stopped? Clutch disengaged? Slow speed?

I really like it, I think, because it will allow me to go in reverse really slowly when snowblowing.

Thanks,
Jim

Use it when ever needed with one exception. The TA should not be used to slow down in higher gears, or on the road at speed. There is a hydraulic disk clutch that prevents the tractor from free wheeling down hills with the TA back (reduction). This clutch cannot handle using it as a "jake brake". Older mechanical TA systems did not have that feature, and could runaway down hills with wagons or on the street down hill.
Using it as needed and often hurts nothing, and keeps the mechanism in good order. It will last as long in TA as it will in direct drive. Shift on the go up or down with no clutch. It is clutch operated internally and has no need to be stopped to be used. Do not move the lever slowly. Just briskly move it forward or back with no hesitation. Enjoy. Jim

It is meant to be shifted "on the go." Move the lever smoothly in one motion all the way forward or back; don't dawdle in the middle.

Run with the lever forward most of the time, only pull back if you are on level ground, going uphill, or have a draft load like tillage equipment behind. If you pull the lever going downhill without something to drag you down, you will go for a ride. There is no holdback on the 666.
