Farmall BN charging

I’m working on a BN it’s 6 volt has the original wiring set up. When it’s running the amp gauge gets pegged out at anything over idle. There was some water on top of the battery like it was overcharging but I went to start it today and the the battery was real weak but it started I put a volt meter on the battery when it was running at full throttle and it read 8.3 volts idle it down and it read 6. Then when it was shut off he battery would read 5.5 and bounce around to 6.5. I’m thinking the battery may be bad? I did try and move the switch for the lights and the charging rate but that didn’t make a difference

Sounds like the battery is failed. Being 'destroyed' by constant boiling/overchargeing.Repaur the charging system,be it simple or not. If you don't have the skills, find someone who does. Do some trouble shooting, dont just start throwing new parts at it.I would start at the voltage regulator.Or....I would probably just convert to 12,useing a one wire alternator. Strip out the entire harness and totally rewire. Problems solved. BTDT

Thanks deltared I want to repair the issue as the the generator is charging and I’m fine with it being 6 volts. I put a card between the cutout points in the voltage regulator and ran the tractor as I checked the voltage on the two wires going from the generator to the voltage regulator and one was at 6.5 volts and one was at 18.3 volts Then the two terminals on the voltage regulator were at 2.3 volts Sounds to me like the voltage regulator is bad. What do you guys think?
