welder farmall stationary engine

I have an old welder powered by an older farmall engine. I rescued it from a barn several years ago and am getting it going again. There are just casting numbers and no serial number that I can find on the engine. The oil filter number was destroyed by the oil years ago but an 85172 fits the canister. I am thinking it is an "A" engine but what is the best way to be sure? Any help would be appreciated.

I believe if this is an A engine the serial # should be on the right side if the block around 1 inch below the head and 2 or 3 inches back from the front corner on a machined pad.

Thanks very much. I had thought so too, but had not seen the machined flat spot behind the throttle linkage. I should have known better. Now I just need to research the serial number. Thanks again.
