magnetic heat gauge for cub tractor?

The Cub never had a temperature gauge and none has ever been available. There is no place to install it, and a "magnetic" one would not tell you anything about the coolant.

I have seen where a person has drilled into the water jacket and installed a standard temperature gauge from the auto parts store, but that is an extremely risky idea. You'd have to know exactly where in the block and at what angle to drill so that you have enough thickness to take threads, and not bust a piece out of the block in the process. The one I saw had a LOT of JB weld and goop on the fittings. The gauge was shot, so the owner just cut the capillary tube off and left it alone rather than risk a leak trying to change it.

They make units that you can splice into the radiator hose. It is basically a piece of aluminum tubing that has enough mass in the middle so that you can thread in a temp gauge. That's been on my to do list for my JD 850, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Do a search on ebay for radiator hose temperature sensor and you will see a wide variety at very low prices.

If it maintains the proper level of the right coolant and never boils I wouldn't worry about it! The older tractors with thermosiphon cooling have to warm up to circulate, many of them never had temp gauges, don't need them.

Any generic temp gauge kit at napa will work. The thermal sensor screws into the radiator drain plug with the 1/2 npt (iir) adaptor in the kit. One wire forward from dash, route down by governor to drain plug original location. Handy but unnecessary.... my worn out 48 barley gets to 170 on a hot day packing 500 lbs liquid fertilizer and me, running pump off pto. They only overheat if fan shroud is missing
