Lapping Liftall ball seats

I was having some bleed back on my liftall and am in the process of lapping the ball valve seats with a ball 1/32 larger than the replacemant balls. How can I tell when I've got the seats right? I placed a ball in the seat before I started, and shined a flashlight up under the ball and some light leaked through. I lapped it for a while and cleaned it up good. I still get light leaking through. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks, Joe

Joe, where did you find out about lapping the ball seats? About using a larger ball to lap in the seat? IHC Service Manual, IHC Liftall Service Manual?? or your idea? After lapping, maybe you should put in correct diameter ball and then gently tap it with brass punch (use new ball for final assembly) . yes, no ? Did the original ball have ring worn in it?

I got the info on lapping the check valve ball seats from the Liftall section in the IT manual. They recommend lapping the seats with the ball 1/32 larger than the valve ball. One of the two balls I removed was pitted somewhat with rust. After I posted my question, I continued to lap the valve seats and they got to where they sealed a lot better than they were, but some light still got through. They may seal 30 wt. oil just fine like I have them now. I guess I'll put it back together and see, unless someone has a better suggestion. Joe

that sounds wise. if it works, that's the main thing. Joe, what was the liftall doing that made you service it? Implements slowly dropping, no lift power or what?

My 3 pt hitch would let the implements creep down. The brush hog was the main problem, as I would have to keep an eye on it and raise once in a while to keep it from scalping the pasture.
Sometimes, it would seal and hold pretty well. When I took it apart, I found that one of the two check valve balls had more pitting than the other, and it was primarily on one half. I think that when the ball would seat on the non-pitted side, is when it would seal better. Anyway, I'm ready to put it back together when I get a gasket. I'll post my results.
