I picked up an IH 806 and I need hydraulic fluid for it. I am in MS and I do not see any dealers in my state. Online I see HY-TRANS as the fluid to use. I am only using this tractor to care for the road at my house. Given that fact, is there a generic hydraulic fluid I can use? Given the sporadic use of the machine I want to keep costs down as much as possible. Thoughts?

Another alternative Hydraulic Fluid is that available from Rural King - their brand is called HARVEST KING & their fluid noted as "Case IH Trans Hydraulic Fluid" - it's about $11.25/gallon so (17) gal = $191.
Agree that purchase of 17 gal of Hytran (vs off brand) is NOT small change. Would use off brand where tractor is NOT providing a livelihood for it's owner but IS a parade queen (or at least light duty, low hour usage). Just my two cents as I'm usually driven more by costs, particularly with tractor NOT used that hard or often.

I feel the need to qualify my usage for this tractor and quantify "saving a few bucks"

I bought this tractor for less than $5k delivered to my place and it will only be used to fix my road since my town/county is to sorry to fix it themselves. I only bought this thing because my Kubota didn't have a FEL and I needed something cheap to take care of the job.

So, the tractor will be used infrequently and not for long periods of time. At 17 gallons per fill, it looks like $391 or so for HyTran and $136 for generic. So at over $250 difference for just oil alone. I'd say it's a little more than a few dollars. (I fully understand that if this is your livelihood that is money well spent. This, however, is not the case for me.) I just need it to do the job.

Big controversy with the 303 fluid recently. States are starting to "ban" it. Missouri, and now Georgia.
At both TSC and Runnings around here, signs have been posted on the pallets of 303 fluid, stating explicitly that it should not be used in tractors made after 1974.

NOWHERE on a 303 can does it say anything about being Hytran compatible. It's "probably" okay but if it "probably" isn't it will "probably" cost you a minimum of $5000 for repairs.

For not much more than 303, you can at least use fluid that at least says "Hytran compatible" on the can, or meets MS-1209 specifications.

I agree which is why any such oil has never been used by me on my farm. I've run JD Hy-Gard in the 986 for many years now w/o issue. I even have run JD 50 plus 15-
40 in the 986 engine for many years w/o issue. Trying to save a few bucks on hydraulic oil is just not worth the risk especially if tractors share implements.

Agreed. I have used it in a 350 and a 560 - I'm guessing the version of "Hytran" that existed in the 1950s was probably about equal to John Deere's 303. Basically a light gear oil that didn't get as "thick" as 90 weight in the winter so the TA can work. I would never use it to fill a large frame tractor like the 806 - the additive package needed for those transmissions just doesn't exist in oil you can buy for less than $1 per quart.

While I wouldn't use the cheap 303 fluid except maybe to add to low fluid in a pinch but I wouldn't fill a large frame IH tractor transmission with it. 303 will usually work as hydraulic fluid but it doesn't have the additives to work as a transhydraulic fluid in an 806.

I would use Mystik JT-5 to fill an 806 if you couldn't get a hold of some Hytran. Check the labels and make sure it is compatible. Personally I wouldn't use the "Traveler" transhydraulic fluid in a large frame IH tractor even though some of it's containers claim that it is compatible with HyTran.

While HiTran is the recommended fluid, there are many hydraulic/gear oils that are acceptable. JohnDeere 'HyGard',Phillips HG fluid,NapaTransdrailc,Walmart TransmissionHydralic fluid,303 fluid..... .Basicly any HydralicTransmission fluid will work.I use 303 fluid from TSC,have for years.Run it in a 706,826,1256.1456..... Read the label. It will say campatable with IHHyTran fluid.
