i bought an h from a guy i work with for 300.00 he said it had been a few years since the old thing had been moved or started, but the engine wasnt frozen and the radiator and oil pan were full so i didnt think there would be much truoble with getting it to run again. i was right brought it home gave it a tune up changed oil and antifreeze, rebuilt carb and got new battery. pulled the lever rolled over about five times cough and backfired then started right up runs great no smoke, no leaks. dicided to let the engine warm up so i let out the clutch, started to move, checked to make sure it was in neutral, it was let out on the clutch started to move again. but when i put it in gear (any gear) to move it acts like your letting out on the clutch with your foot on both brakes, wont move. what is my problem? i think maybe the clutch could be froze-up because it doesnt have a belly pump and where it should be the cover is gone, with it sitting outside i figure water condesation has rusted everything together any advice?

Is something going on here??? Last week
I pickup an H for $700.00 which everyone
thought was a great deal, and now John gets
one for $300.00.Has the stock market thing
made its way into the old tractor market??
Do we hide them in the barn and wait for
the market to rebound, work a trade for a
John Deere,or jump off the silo??? Wife
has made note of fact that last weeks great purchase has now lost more than
50%. Nervous here in Wisconsin!!!!! RON

John you should feel guilty about "stealing" that H. That is a great price!! The advice below is right on. Sounds like she is stuck in two gears. Your gonna have to remove that shifter and use a large screwdriver to line up the shifting forks in neutral. Then you can re-install the shifter and shift SLOWLY into first or reverse gear to get going.

Congratulations on stealing that H! Has your friend got any more he'd like to sell at a similar price!? Only kidding - sounds like a great deal - have fun.

Since you can move the tractor by just releasing the clutch it sounds like its already in gear. By purposely putting it in a gear you are now in 2 gears and thus it can't move. Its a fairly common problem with the old farmalls. You should be able to tell which gear is stuck by moving the shifting lever on each gear until you find one that doesn't seem to be moving. You may be able to play with the shifting lever to get it out but you may need to take off the shifting lever and pry the gear back. It also means either the end of the shifter is worn or the pin the shifter pivots on is worn.

The problem is likely to be a worn shifter, that has allowed one gear to stay engauged while the shifter returns to the neutral position. remove the shifter ( take out two freeze plugs at the base & knock out a pin) and check to see if all shift rails are aligned in neutral. Check the end of the shifter for wear. you can build the end up so that the shifter will work.
