Super m 12 volt conversion

I'm looking for opinions on best kit for 12 volt conversion. I don't want to cut the hood as this was my father in laws tractor that he bought new.

No need to buy a "conversion".A GM one wire(what I use),or a Japanese import alternator will do the job.I just go to NAPa and buy the 'cheap' one wire. you don't need to cut the hood.Only lazy 'hacks' do that.Oftentimes you can simply turn over the gen bracket and get the nessesary clearance.Or build a bracket. If you don't have the skills, enlist some help.I've converted 4-5 H/Ms over the years.About to do a 400 for me and a 4020 for a neighbor.Easiest way is to completely strip out the old harness and start over.If you want, call me.I can walk you through. BTW,This site (Yesterday'sTractor') sells a 12V kit for a SM.No hood cutting required. Under $200

Hitachi #14231 is smaller and its L terminal goes to the ignition through a 10 ohm resistor (or diode, or marker lamp bulb) the S terminal goes to (with a short 14 gauge wire) to the Output stud. Jim

Take a look at the pictures on my web site. I have been selling kits for a number of years. charliesrepair.com I can do either the Delco alternator or I really like the Hitachi alternator as it's the same diameter as the generator. Charlie U

im going to do a 12volt alternator conversion on a 45 w4, im also going to put in a distributor, and i want to use a volt meter instead of a amp meter , also going to rewire the whole tractor, does any one have a wiring diagram that would fit my criteria? thanks

I have know Charlie for 6 years now. Have 4 of this kits, H, SW6, 400 & W450. Used the Hitachi alternator in all of them. Go to his website, very simple straight forward diagrams. Just use the Farmall H as your W4 wiring. But they will show an amp meter in the circuit thou.

The large Delco alternator will fit an M, Super M just fine with no need to cut the hood, and you can even use the original generator belt.

Use Charlie’s diagram for 12v coil H-M, sounds like your replacing a mag with a distributor. Get you a 12v coil that does not require an external resistor. The only variations are that the 10g wire shown connecting to the amp gauge will connect straight to the ignition switch. The wire feeding the light fuse will also connect with that wire at the ignition switch. Then you just need a wire to feed your volt meter on the on-off side of the ignition switch and the other volt meter terminal goes to a GOOD ground. Be aware his diagram refers to diode plug that is part of the harness he sells. A diode or marker bulb must be wired into the terminal 1 connection at the alt or your tractor will continue to run off power produced by the alt after you shut it off. I also would recommend a 30-40 amp fuseable link wired in at the power pickup point from the starter switch. That way if something shorts it burns that out instead of all your pretty new wiring.

Oops, and the 10g feed to the alt, can also hook to the unswitched side of the ingnition switch or hook in to the pickup point for the power at the start switch. Also connected to the fuseable link if you decide to install one.
