I would like to install electronic ignition in my 1948 Farmall M, but I need to identify the distributor in order to get the correct ignition parts. My distributor does not have any numbers stamped on it's bell. The only thing stamped on the bell is IH and something that could be the letter "L". Is there somewhere else I should be looking? Any help is deeply appreciated.

Thanks to everyone for the prompt replies. We are in the middle of a snow storm here in central Wisconsin, so I will have to wait until the weather clears to check this out. Thanks again!

It's a IH, around 180 degrees from the IH and L should be 6 numbers and a R1 unless they failed to show up for some reason. On the round part that the two hold down clamps contact you can find the code some letter or letters and numbers. Should find a letter A in that if a original M type. Needs removed or turned to read those most times. Code won't mater to what electronic ignition fits.

Call Pertronix help line and they will tell you exactly what system you will need. That is what I did as the catalog numbers were confusing and show several systems. They guy there agreed with me.

AFAIK, all actual IH 4-cylinder distributors take the same basic Ignitor module. The suffixes at the end narrow it down to how your tractor is set up, 6 or 12 Volts, (+) or (-) ground. Look at the footnotes. If it's a Delco, it take a different module, but I would assume the Delco versions wouldn't have "IH" on them.

Think any numbers might be on the rib that the hold downs clamp to.

Do you have a Steiners sales book, they describe them in there, and a few options also.

I have no connection to this site or to our gracious hosts, but can't help but wonder why a GUEST here would steer a potential customer to a competitor's website???

Just say'in.
