I'm fixing up a 1955 International 100 (industrial) as close to period as I can without breaking the bank. I've searched around for muffler and cap and there are several aftermarket makes with different metal finishes. Prices are across the board. Suggestions on type and vendor recommendation appreciated. I've noted that some folks finish off their restoration projects with chrome. Good idea/bad idea? Thanks.

You don't. You get a generic Cherry Bomb muffler with the correct inlet size for your exhaust pipe, or cobble up something to make one that's "close" fit.
It's not a tractor muffler. It's a car muffler and looks like a car muffler stuck on a tractor.

The Stanley muffler is fine (IH-3 is the model number), and you can get them fairly reasonable ($40) at Tractor Supply or slightly less online ($25+shipping). Next step up is the "restoration quality" muffler in plain steel.

By all means, the "restoration quality" mufflers from Steiner or similar with the IH emblem on the side. They are made from the original IH blueprints and look and sound right.....most aftermarkets have a 2" outlet which is not correct for the A--140 tractors.

I learned long ago that as the price of something goes down so down quality and longevity.

Where would you go to get such a muffler for 1955 Farmall?

I use the Cherry Bomb or straight through seamless mufflers. They will last practically forever and give the tractor a throaty but not loud sound. Plus they are very reasonably priced.

That was helpful. This tractor was apparently owned by a state or local government to mow grass. It didn't have lights which were also an option. It did not come with a muffler but a straight pipe with a small curve at the top. I suppose the straight pipe would have cooler sound than a muffler.

On the original tractors, the muffler was an option. Chrome or stainless are pretty modern and are more for show than staying original. The standard grey finish is the closest to factory and are readily available from basically anyone who sells tractor parts including this site. Caps are personal preference, I have them on all my tractors just to keep the elements out if left outside.

The Muffler from this site, or Steiners seem OK the Stanley mufflers look correct, but are louder. If you can see through it end to end, it will be loud. Jim

I like "loud". LOL The SuperM has a Stanley. sounds GREAT! The 400 has a factory original IH muffler. Too quiet. The 1256 has a straight pipe, the 1456 may soon get it's muffler replaced with a straight pipe as well....Btw,My old 1970 Ford still has the (burned out) 'glass pacs'. Love em!(so do the neighbors) LOL
