560 T/A problem?

I've had this 560W for over 10 years, and hadn't used the T/A for about that long. Been pulling it all summer without issue, sometimes all the way to stalling, with 105 hp. Prior to last weekend's pull, I pulled the T/A back (not under load) just to see if it worked. It was fine. During this pull, in direct, the wheel speed slowed way down. You can see it in the video. I messed with the handle a little, and it picked back up. Didn't have a problem with the next two runs. I don't know much about the T/A. Can it slip in direct? Could something have stuck after not using it for so long? It will probably get eliminated if I have to tear it down. Thanks for the help.

Tunica was great again this year! I like your 560.

What happens when you pull the lever is, it releases a small clutch at the front of the TA unit, which lets the planetary gear reduction that is the heart and soul of a TA start doing its job to "amplify torque."

I'm thinking maybe the TA lever is sticky/rusted and wasn't going fully forward? This would cause the TA clutch to be held partially engaged and obviously it would slip.
Another possibility is the TA is adjusted wrong. It's allowing the TA clutch to slip, which will eventually wear it out.

The TA clutch could be getting long in the tooth, too... Replacing the TA clutch on that tractor is only a bell housing split and not too bad. If the low end of the TA pulls, I would not bother removing it, just replace the clutch while you have it opened up.

If a TA clutch (small simple mechanical friction clutch in the front of the unit) slips while in direct, it can allow the rear wheels to slow down to the speed as though the lever was pulled back. If the TA sprag clutch in a 560 fails with the TA pulled back, in a pulling (or plowing etc) it will stop cold. The engine will still be at full throttle, but it will be as though it is in neutral. So the slippage you found could be a result of the first use in years letting rust and crumbs of that long non-use, let it slip for a tiny bit, till it got sticky again. If it were mine, I would use the TA regularly to keep it happy. Jim

Thanks, Jim. I suspected something like that. Seems fine now. I'll "exercise" it a little more often.
