When you ground the field does that make it charge. If it doesent charge with field grounded the gen is bad. If it does charge with field grounded the reg is bad. That system used a cut-out and if it has been changed to a regulator mite be the wrong one. Is the Delco # on the gen end with 355 or 423. as those were the #s of the original gens.

I have a good one from a 46H. Pay the freight and give me a few $$ and I will send it to you. I'm in MN. Or I can send it to you before you pay.

I have taken this generator to a shop that does these; I rewired my tractor with "10 gauge" wire.... Hope to have it fixed and working soon. I know everyone is tired of seeing this post - including me! Thanks.

And $200 is very, very high for a generator rebuild. If it were some foreign generator that they only made 50 of... sure. Generators are pretty simple and the ones on these tractors are pretty common. You may call around at your local small engine shops too.

I was having a starter worked on - same shop does both and I'm sure he did them both just as poorly.

Have you thought about a Hitachi Alternator and converting to 12 volts. The Hitachi is small and will fit your H tractor without mutilating the hood. Like a Delco, the regulator is self contained.

That generator is not bad. (opinion) take it to a generator shop and have it tested before spending massively on it. We cannot be next to you as the tests are performed. If there asr issues with it having it rebuilt is far better than a new one as the new are likely imported similar items. Jim

You have to make sure its a good shop. I brought a 50 year old starter with a dead spot to a local shop that had been around forever and supposedly had a "good" reputation. After spending $200 to have them rebuild it I got about a week of use out of it and another week of utter frustration before it burned itself out. The "cheap import" I bought to replace it seems to be just fine.

Starter Armatures are difficult to diagnose even with a growler as the armature wiring of a starter is so much larger than that of a generator.
