Been working a Farmall 400 that had camshaft & nut failure. My Dad had taken the big nut off, shaft off & the power steering unit off while I was at work. I got the engine back together & running good. I started to put the steering system back in.
Noticed the nut on the end of the shaft was loose with a cotter pin, I'm assuming the nut is to be tight? Cant find any info in IH manuals.
Is the shaft/worm gear suppose to be installed all the way in the bolster housing? Then tighten the cast nut till its tight?
Thanks

redturbo,
When the nut was tight the cotter pin hole probably didn't line up so the nut was backed off to the first hole that lined up.
Yes, twist the steering shaft in until the bearing seats, then install the cast retainer nut.
That's what I think anyway.

However the number of AC tractors still in existence today as either restored or unrestored examples is a testament to the quality of their products. This in itself is always apparent here in the U.K when attempting a purchase, as no matter what the model or condition the price will always be strong.
