I just joined the forum looking forward to It! I have 5 farmall tractors, a 706 diesel, 3 M's, and a super C. I am currently rebuilding a 49 M that my grandfather bought new. I will probably have a few irritating questions through this!

Tom

Just to add to this, I looked up the serial # yesterday and it is a 51, not a 49.

Thanks for the replies!! It does have the shutters but no linkage. I bought a parts tractor yesterday that's been sitting in a field since the mid seventies that has all the linkage and complete shutters. Mine has a live pump on it (it's a 51) but my uncle said it leaked hyd fluid into the block. Do they still make these pumps, or are they rebuild able? He wasn't very good to the tractor, it's pretty rough.

Just FYI, I got tired of draping towels and shop clothes across my "H" radiator, to get it to warm up, so I found a used [real used] $40 set of shutters, and fab'ed some operating linkage / rods / crank eye-bolts, and installed the contraption. Works perfectly, really heats up the old girl. Highly recommended.

Rbtom, I think if the tractor came with a distillate or kerosene engine it would have shutters no matter what year. Could have also been an option on gasoline tractors also.

How is yours equipped? Welcome to the forum

Dennis

Were the shutters an option throughout the M production or just certain year's?

shutters came on pretty much all these old tractors, right from the 1930's to the 1960's on the 560,660 international diesel.

Shutters were on all M tractors equipped with kerosene/distillate engines. They were used to help the engine get up to operating temperature. They also had a different manifold as well as a small gasoline starting tank under the hood. Most people do not run kerosene anymore due to the cost.

You have come to a great spot on the internet - lots of great people here who are knowledgeable. Check out my YouTube channel as well - last year I did a complete engine overhaul on a salvage yard '47 M I picked up and brought back from the dead. Lot of issues that motor had, but it runs like a top now!

Shutters were an option the 49 M came with shutters and it was a gasser.
