I've noticed with my 986 that when I start it up even in warm weather it kinda sputters, caughs, and blows a little smoke for a bit then clears up and runs smooth and sounds good. Has the 436 engine and does start smoother after the tractor has been ran.

I got to try out a 966 Diesel,In the fall of the year, when they were new, it was chilly at nites, the 806 started ok, but that 966, you just bump that starter button and it was running on all 6 instantly, man was I impressed, but that was a 414, i think.

It's amazing how well some of them will start. I've started our 1486 down to about 10 degrees without being plugged in, and it will do just as you say, half a turn and she's running smooth.

The 436 natural aspirated engine has different injection nozzles for better economy and some (not all) were slow starters from New.

Diesels depend on heat to ignite the fuel as it is injected. The heat of compression (and on some) the heat of glow plugs or intake air heaters that assist in getting to the kindling temperature of the fuel. Even brand new engines can stumble around building that temp. A tiny inconsistency in fuel spray pattern, or injector opening pressure, or pump output, or total compression variation from cylinder to cylinder can cause your issue. On some engines it takes as much as 15 minutes to run correctly. If it cleans up and runs well, as described, call it good. Jim

Thanks for the quick response. I was just curious because my 756 diesel just fires up and runs smooth. My 986 probly stumbles for 5-10 seconds depending on air temp outside. The injector pump had been replaced before I got the tractor many years ago. Had a couple weeping injectors and went ahead and replaced all 6 last year. Could the timing on the injector pump have any affect?
