How long is a M from the front of the front tires to the back of the rear tires? How wide is the rear tire when wheels are all the way in, not turned inside out? I have to haul one, and I need to know the length and width of trailer I need. I am geussing a 6000# capacity trailer?? Is Gary Biewer a good person to buy from? Anyone experience any problems in buying a STUCK tractor from him? Thanks again..

I bought a 300 row crop from him a couple of months ago. Motor was loose, not STUCK. I'll let you know how much $$$ I'll sink into it when it's done this spring. I probably paid too much for it but it had all the goodies, live hydraulics, live pto, powersteering, wide front end etc. Anyhow, I'll be a little smarter next time I buy a non-running tractor.

Before you buy, you might want to check out Mitchell's in Kindred,ND- they have many running M's in the 750 to 1000 dollar range- plus a few "stuck" M's- for a lot cheaper. They'll be willing to negotiate a fair price too. Search the old posts for their phone number..

To haul an M, you need a minimum of a 10,000 lb gross weight trailer. The M itself weighs around 6,000 even if the tires do not have fluid. So 6 to 7 thousand lbs for the M and 3 to 4000 for the trailer. Most trailers of that capacity you will not have a problem with the length. It will easily fit on a 16 ft long trailer. The problem is the width. Low boy trailers where the tractor has to fit between the fenders or wheels will not work if you have the wheels turned out. You have to have an over the wheels trailer. My MD is a little over 85 inches out to out of the tires with the wheels turned out and set in as far as possible on the axles. It has 11 inch rims and 13.6 tires. If you have smaller tires, you might get by with a 7 ft wide trailer, but barely. But the Ms usually have the 13.6 tires as a minimum. Also, do not try to pull the M on a trailer for any significant distance with a 1/2 ton pickup. You will be sorry. You need at least a 3/4 ton with a good strong engine. A trailer with brakes is also a must.

I have been told that the dry wieght of an M is like just over 5000#. I have also been told that my 2000 1/2 ton GMC could haul it fairly well with the tow/haul option, and a 5300 V8 with a 3.73 axle ratio. It has a class 4 on it, no gooseneck or 5th wheel. Is 10 miles a significant distance? Please give me info.... I forget who told me that I could tow this. But it was a person with an M and a 1/2 ton Chevy with a 350, and the tow/haul switch. Thanks..

Ten miles should be no problem for your truck. Yes the dry weight of the M is maybe 5400 lbs. But that counts no accessories like the lift all, the 13 gallons of trans fluid, the belt pulley and so on. A significant distance I would say is more than 100 miles. Although I would not want to go with the M behind your truck on a 100 mile trip very often. I hauled my MD 500 miles when I bought it. I have a 99 Silverado 2500 with the 6 liter V8 and a 5 speed manual. It handled it OK, but I would not want to go with a load any heavier than that. I was using a tag-a-long trailer I borrowed. I now have a gooseneck, but have not really tried it out yet. For any long hauls with a heavy load such as an M, you need a transmission cooler and an engine oil cooler. Those come with the trailering package on the Chevy Silverado. Good Luck !! Let me know how you get along with your M.

Kenny,

I have never bought anything from Gary, but truth is that no matter who you buy a stuck tractor from, there is no guarantee as to what is ultimately wrong with it... I myself have only bought 1 running tractor of the 7 that I have.. I haven't had many problems with most, but one of my Hs had to be line bored on the main journals, and 3 of the connecting rods had to be rebuilt all because the caps had been filed to eliminate the use of regrinding the crank and replacing the bearings.. The tractor also had to have the transmission main shaft, 4&5 slider, and all trans forks replaced.. I guess all I can say is sometimes you get burned, and from what I have seen you say, I think the $700 you are talking about would be able to buy a running tractor. I have never paid more than $250 for a stuck tractor..

Okay, I did a little surfing around, and found an entry on the weight, but didn't find anything on dimensions.

To see how it works, go to the search box on the top of this page, and type in "M Weight". Be sure you use the quote marks, it narrows the search nicely.

Someone may come along that has a good idea of the dimensions.
