What would/could cause the expansion plug to dislodge and let the steering box oil out. Plug is located at the end of steering gear shaft at the bottom of housing.

They are not very well stuck in the hole. Some leak, mine had to be replaced from leaking. To see if something pushed it out, clean the area and look in with a mirror on a stick. Jim

I have mine all apart. Noticed the plug was some what dislodged. Mine is getting new "O" rings, thrust bearings, one sector shaft, and grease seals. Thinking about a scheme to hold plug in place from below. Was wondering if it is even possible for steering gear shaft to contact the plug, does not seem possible from looking at it. I did have massive hyd oil leaks. Some came out the plug with vent near steering wheel and some ran out the shaft seals on either side. Only other thing I can think of is hyd oil pressure under the right conditions. Thank you.

New plugs are common NAPA parts and can be put in and expanded to seal. Cjean the housing, put a very thin #2 permatex bead on the lip at the bottom of the hole. insert the new core plug and use a blunt (1/2") diameter punch or rod to hammer in the dome of the new plug to flat. Jim
