IH 584 Diesel surging

Got a call from a guy about his 584 and it surging. Its a diesel. I not much of a diesel guy but figure the first place to start is changing the filter. I asked him when the last time the fuel filter had been changed and he said at least 7 years ago.

So am I on the right track as to finding his problem??
Thanks

Ya I will check those also. I did call asking if the local auto part store had the fuel filters on hand and they said there are 4 different filters listed for it so I have to go and look at it just to get the correct filters so will check the air filter at that time also

I agree with checking filters. Also, if mine gets ANY air in the fuel line it acts ornery. Have to crack all 4 lines and let it slobber diesel for several minutes to get it straightened out.

Also check fuel flow from the tank. Remove the fuel line from the tank at the input to the first fuel filter and let it drain into a clean bucket. It should run out t the full of the fuel line . These tractors have a history of gathering junk in the bottom of fuel tank restricting flow. Blowing compressed air back the fuel line is a short term solution. Only fix is to remove outlets out of both bottoms of fuel tank and drain and flush.

Once the filters are swapped out add a quart of ATF to a few gallons of diesel fuel and pour into the tank. The ATF has an affinity for moisture and will remove water, it will also lube the pump. Some injector cleaner would be good too. I sometimes just add a quart of oil to the fuel specifically to lube the pump on our 584.

At this time I have not hand my hands on it since the guy had brake problems over a year ago so no I have not checked lines for air as of yet. Shoot I have to go look at it just to see what filters it will take

If it has the glass bowls with the little short tin filter. The ones for a 354 perkins are the same filter. If it has the spin on those are pretty common at napa. That is the only ones Different I know of unless they are talking about the spin on with or without the water drains on the bottom of them.
